Where to Find Needs as a Steward

One of the most important roles of a NeighborLink Steward is helping needs become visible.

Because no matter how many neighbors are ready to serve, if no needs are shared, nothing moves.

The good news? Needs are everywhere.

The challenge is helping people feel seen, supported, and safe enough to share them.

Start with What's Already There

You don't have to create needs, you only have to uncover them.

Every community already has:

  • Homeowners who are overwhelmed

  • Individuals facing physical or financial limitations

  • Families navigating unexpected circumstances

Effective Stewards learn to look beneath the surface and ask:
Where are people already struggling quietly?

Partner with Trusted Organizations

Some of the most meaningful needs are already known, they're just not publicly visible.

That's why relationships are key.

Start by connecting with churches and faith communities; social service agencies; food banks and resource centers; and schools and community programs.

These organizations are often walking closely with people in need.
They can often help identify opportunities that are appropriate to share on NeighborLink.

Engage Local Leadership

City and community leaders have a unique perspective on where help is needed.

Consider building relationships with city government staff, neighborhood associations, code enforcement or housing departments, and community development organizations.

They often see patterns and areas where small acts of service could make a big difference.

Listen in Everyday Conversations

Not every need comes through an organization.

Some of the most impactful opportunities come from simple, everyday interactions.

Pay attention when people say things like:

  • "I just can't keep up with the yard anymore."

  • "We've been meaning to fix that, but haven't had the time or help."

  • "I don't even know where to start."

These are often invitations to step in and help someone take the next step.

Create Clear Pathways to Share

Sometimes the barrier isn't the need. It's the process.

People may hesitate to ask for help because they don't want to feel like a burden or they aren't sure if their need "qualifies."

Effective Stewards lower that barrier by offering to help write or submit the need, explaining what kinds of requests are appropriate, and reassuring people that it's okay to ask.

When the process feels safe and simple, more needs surface.

Look for "Everyday" Projects

Not every need is large or urgent..

Some of the most common NeighborLink projects are simple.

These kinds of needs are easier for neighbors to say "yes" to, quicker to complete, and are often the starting point for deeper connection.

Stay Attentive and Consistent

Finding needs isn't a one-time effort, but an ongoing posture.

Effective Stewards will regularly check in with partners, revisit past connections, keep an eye on gaps in the platform, and stay curious about what's happening in their community.

Over time, this consistency builds a steady flow of opportunities.

What You're Really Doing

Finding needs isn't just about filling the platform.

It's about helping people take a step they might not take on their own.

It's about making it possible for neighbors to be seen, known, and cared for.

And when those needs become visible, neighbors respond, connections form, and communities begin to change from the inside out.
