What Volunteers May Ask From Homeowners

NeighborLink projects are built on neighbors working together.

While volunteers offer their time and skills freely, there are times when they may ask homeowners for certain things to help the project run smoothly. These requests are not meant to create pressure, but to support a shared and successful experience.

Access to the Space

In order to complete a project, volunteers may need access to certain areas of your home or property.

This could include entry to a specific room, access to a backyard or garage, or use of a water source or electrical outlet.

Volunteers should communicate these needs clearly ahead of time and always respect any boundaries you set. You are free to decide what access you are comfortable providing.

Help When It Makes Sense

In some situations, volunteers may ask if you or a family member would like to help.

This is never required.

However, when homeowners or family members are able and willing, it can be a meaningful part of the experience. Working together often brings a sense of shared purpose and can even make the project more efficient.

Sometimes people assume they should stay out of the way, but an invitation to participate can be a welcome opportunity.

Conversations About Materials

For projects that require materials, volunteers may ask how those costs will be handled.

This could include:

  • Asking if you are able to purchase materials

  • Discussing co-pay options

  • Exploring whether an organization or fund may help cover costs

These conversations are a normal part of planning and should always be handled with clarity and respect.

Every situation is different, and it is okay to take time to find an approach that works for everyone involved.

Flexibility and Communication

Volunteers may also ask questions to better understand the project. These may include clarifying the scope of the work, confirming priorities, or discussing timing or scheduling.

These conversations help ensure that expectations are aligned and that the project can be completed in a way that serves you well.

What Volunteers Should Not Ask

Just as there are appropriate requests, there are also clear boundaries.

Volunteers should not:

  • Ask for payment for their labor

  • Request money outside of the agreed-upon material costs

  • Pressure you to participate in ways that make you uncomfortable

  • Enter areas of your home without permission

NeighborLink is built on trust and mutual respect. Any request made by a volunteer should reflect that.

A Shared Approach to Serving

Every NeighborLink project is a partnership.

Volunteers bring their willingness to serve. Homeowners bring their openness in sharing a need. Along the way, there may be small requests that help the project move forward.

When these are approached with honesty, flexibility, and respect, the experience becomes something more than completing a task; it becomes neighbors working together in a way that benefits everyone involved.
