Privacy and Safety
Opening your home to people you may not know can feel like a big step.
NeighborLink recognizes that homeowners are sharing more than a project request. They are sharing a part of their personal space. Because of this, privacy and safety are important parts of the NeighborLink experience.
Healthy neighboring begins when everyone involved feels comfortable and respected.
Background Checks Help Build Trust
Volunteers who claim projects through NeighborLink complete a background check.
This step is one of the ways organizations help protect homeowners, many of whom may be older adults, individuals with disabilities, or neighbors navigating challenging seasons of life.
While no system can eliminate every risk, background checks help ensure that the people responding to projects have been vetted before entering someone's home or property.
These simple safeguards help create an environment where trust can grow.
Your Comfort Matters
Every homeowner has the right to decide what feels comfortable during a project.
Many volunteers enjoy meeting the neighbors they are serving and hearing their stories. These conversations can often be among the most meaningful moments of a project.
At the same time, homeowners should never feel pressured to interact in ways that feel uncomfortable.
Some neighbors prefer to step outside and visit while the work is being done. Others choose to remain inside or check in occasionally. Some may simply give instructions at the beginning and allow volunteers to complete the work.
Each of these approaches is perfectly acceptable.
Setting Healthy Boundaries
NeighborLink projects work best when expectations are clear.
Homeowners are always welcome to communicate their preferences before volunteers arrive. This might include where volunteers should work, which areas of the property should remain private, or how much interaction they would like during the project.
Volunteers understand that they are guests when they enter someone's home or yard. Respecting those boundaries is part of serving well.
Neighboring Built on Respect
NeighborLink exists to help communities care for one another in practical ways.
When volunteers show up with humility, and homeowners feel safe sharing their needs, something meaningful begins to happen. Tasks get completed, but relationships can grow as well.
By honoring privacy and practicing thoughtful safety measures, NeighborLink helps create a space where neighbors can serve one another with confidence.
